SERVICES

From harmless mud daubers to aggressive yellow jackets - David identifies the species and treats nests safely. Not every wasp on your property needs to go, but the ones near your door definitely do.

The Problem

Not All Wasps Are the Same Problem

Florida's warm, humid climate supports a wide variety of wasp species, and the state's mild winters mean some remain active nearly year-round. Knowing the difference between social and solitary species changes whether a nest is a real concern.

Per UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County, the wasps most likely to be a nuisance around homes fall into two behavioral categories. Social wasps - paper wasps and yellow jackets - build colonies with many workers and are prone to sting when their nest is disturbed. Solitary wasps - mud daubers and similar species - build individual mud chambers, have no colony to defend, and rarely sting unless directly handled.

This distinction matters for how you respond. A mud dauber tube on the garage wall is a low-risk situation. A paper wasp nest growing under the eave by your front door, or a yellow jacket colony established in a wall void, is a different matter entirely - especially as colonies reach their largest size in late summer and early fall.

  • Social vs. Solitary - Social species defend a shared colony aggressively. Solitary species live and hunt alone and rarely sting.
  • Peak Activity - Colonies reach maximum size in late summer and early fall, when aggression and sting risk are highest.
  • Nearly Year-Round in Florida - Mild winters mean some species never experience the full colony die-off seen in colder states.
  • Location Matters - A nest in a remote corner of the yard is a different decision than one near a doorway, walkway, or play area.

Florida Species

Wasps David Treats in Sarasota & Manatee County

Florida hosts dozens of wasp species. Paper wasps, red wasps, and mud daubers are covered under both the Basic and Elite plans. Yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets require a specialty service due to colony size and nest location.

Paper Wasp

Builds open, umbrella-shaped honeycomb nests under eaves, deck rails, and tree branches without any outer covering. Common in residential areas - the cells of the nest are visible from below. Capable of a painful sting, especially when the nest is disturbed, but generally less aggressive than yellow jackets.

Social - Moderate Risk Covered by Basic & Elite

Yellow Jacket

The most aggressive and frequently encountered social wasp in Florida. Builds enclosed paper nests, often underground or inside wall voids, accessed through a small hole. Colonies can grow to thousands of workers and defend the nest aggressively when disturbed, especially near food sources in late summer and fall.

Social - High Risk ★ Specialty Service

Bald-Faced Hornet

Black body with striking white facial markings. Builds large, enclosed paper nests in trees or attached to structures. Extremely aggressive in defense of the nest - among the most defensive stinging insects encountered in Florida.

Social - High Risk ★ Specialty Service

Mud Dauber

Slender, often metallic blue or black with a distinctively narrow waist. Builds small tube-shaped mud nests on exterior walls, under eaves, and in garages. Solitary - no colony to defend - and hunts spiders to provision its nest. Rarely stings unless directly handled, and actually helps reduce spider populations around the home.

Solitary - Low Risk Covered by Basic & Elite

Cicada Killer Wasp

One of the largest wasps in Florida at up to 2 inches long - reddish-brown with yellow markings, alarming in size but solitary and rarely aggressive. Females dig burrows in sandy soil and lawns to provision their young with paralyzed cicadas. Males cannot sting; females rarely sting unless physically grabbed.

Solitary - Low Risk

Red Wasp

A reddish-brown social paper wasp common throughout Florida, closely related to other paper wasp species. Builds open umbrella nests similar to other paper wasps, typically in sheltered areas around structures. Capable of a painful sting in defense of the nest.

Social - Moderate Risk Covered by Basic & Elite

Quick Reference

Which Wasps Need Professional Removal?

Nest location and species both factor into whether a nest is a DIY situation or a call to David - and which service tier covers it.

Species Nest Type Sting Risk Plan Coverage
Paper Wasp Open umbrella nest under eaves, rails, branches Moderate Basic & Elite
Yellow Jacket Enclosed nest - underground or in wall voids High ★ Specialty Service
Bald-Faced Hornet Large enclosed paper nest in trees or on structures High ★ Specialty Service
Mud Dauber Small mud tubes on walls, eaves, garages Low Basic & Elite
Cicada Killer Underground burrows in sandy soil and lawns Low Ask David
Red Wasp Open umbrella nest, similar to paper wasps Moderate Basic & Elite

⛔ Specialty service required for: any underground yellow jacket nest, a nest inside a wall void or attic, bald-faced hornets on or attached to the structure, any nest larger than a softball, or any situation involving a known sting allergy. These are not covered under the Basic or Elite plans and are not manageable with a store-bought aerosol and a ladder - call David for a specialty quote.

David's Approach

Safe Identification, Removal & Prevention

Treating the wrong species the wrong way - or treating at the wrong time of day - is how DIY wasp removal goes wrong.

01

Species ID & Timing

David identifies the species and nest location before treating - the right approach for a paper wasp nest under an eave is different from a yellow jacket colony in a wall void. Treatments are applied early morning or evening, when wasps are least active.

02

Targeted Treatment & Removal

Active nests are treated directly with professional-grade products suited to the species. Once the colony is controlled, the nest is removed where possible and disposed of properly - reducing the chance of scavengers or other wasps reusing the site.

03

Cleanup & Prevention

The nest area is cleaned to remove pheromone trails that draw wasps back to the same site by scent. David also identifies entry points - eaves, vents, gaps near light fixtures - and recommends sealing to discourage new colonies from forming.

Coverage Breakdown

Most Wasps Are Covered - Two Species Are Specialty Service

Paper wasps, red wasps, and mud daubers are removed as a standard part of every Basic and Elite visit. Yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets build larger, more defended colonies - often underground or inside wall voids - and are quoted as a specialty service due to the additional time, equipment, and risk involved.

Basic Quarterly Plan

Four visits a year. Every visit includes physical removal of paper wasp nests, red wasp nests, and mud dauber nests from the home and lanai - plus a full exterior perimeter treatment and fire ant protection up to 15 feet from the structure.

Covers: Paper Wasps, Red Wasps, Mud Daubers

Elite Pest Program

Six visits a year - every other month. Same wasp and web removal at every visit, plus mosquito reduction, flea and tick treatment, and fire ant coverage across up to 15,000 sq ft of lawn. Twice the inspection frequency means nests are caught earlier.

Covers: Paper Wasps, Red Wasps, Mud Daubers

Yellow Jacket & Hornet Removal

Underground colonies, nests inside wall voids, and large enclosed hornet nests require specialty equipment, protective gear, and additional time. Not included in either pest plan - quoted separately based on nest size and location.

Why Ratical

Consistent Visits Catch Nests Before They Grow

DIY nest removal carries a real sting risk, especially for social species. Recurring service catches a nest while it's still small - not after it's grown for months.

🐝

Species-Specific Treatment

David identifies whether a nest is social or solitary, and which species, before deciding on treatment - the right call for a mud dauber tube is very different from a yellow jacket nest.

🛡️

Common Wasps Included Every Visit

Paper wasp, red wasp, and mud dauber removal is included as a standard part of every Basic Quarterly and Elite Program visit. Yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets are quoted separately as a specialty service.
