The Problem

The Scratching in Your Attic Is Not a Coincidence

Florida's subtropical climate makes Sarasota and Manatee County ideal rodent habitat year-round. No cold winter to suppress breeding, no slow season for entry or activity.

Rodents are among the most destructive and health-threatening pests a homeowner can face. Roof rats - by far the most common species in Southwest Florida - enter structures through roofline gaps, soffit voids, and utility penetrations, then nest in attic insulation where they gnaw on electrical wiring, AC ductwork, and structural wood. According to the National Fire Protection Association, rodent gnawing is a documented ignition source in residential attic fires. A roof rat infestation that goes untreated doesn't stay contained to the attic - populations expand as colonies grow, and secondary populations spread into wall voids, kitchen cabinets, and crawl spaces.

Rodents also contaminate surfaces far beyond where they are seen. A roof rat moving through an attic deposits urine continuously along its travel routes - not just at a single location. Droppings, shed fur, and urine carry Hantavirus, Salmonella, leptospirosis, and other pathogens. Attic insulation contaminated by a long-term rodent infestation requires sanitization, not just trapping.

⛔ Traps and bait alone are not a permanent solution. Removing or killing the rodents currently in the structure does not prevent new rodents from entering through the same gaps they used to get in. Within days to weeks, new individuals from the surrounding population will re-enter through unsealed entry points. Exclusion - sealing every entry point - is what actually ends the infestation.

  • Electrical Fire Risk - Rodent gnawing on wiring is a documented residential fire ignition source. Roof rats in attics regularly chew through insulated wires.
  • Year-Round Breeding - No winter dieback in Florida's climate. Roof rats can produce 4-6 litters per year with 6-8 pups each. A small infestation compounds rapidly.
  • Entry Through Tiny Gaps - Roof rats can squeeze through a gap the size of a quarter. House mice need only a 6mm opening - roughly the diameter of a pencil.
  • Health Risks - Rodent droppings, urine, and shed fur carry Hantavirus, Salmonella, leptospirosis, and rat bite fever. Attic contamination spreads via HVAC air circulation.
  • Florida Construction Vulnerability - Barrel tile roofs, open weep holes, and aging soffit material are common entry points specific to Southwest Florida's building styles.

Florida Species

Rodents David Treats in Sarasota & Manatee County

Three species account for nearly all residential rodent problems in this region. Correctly identifying which one matters because they nest in different places and are controlled differently.

Roof Rat

Rattus rattus

The dominant rodent species in Southwest Florida. Slender, agile climbers with dark brown to black fur, large ears, and a tail longer than their body (7-10 inches). Nest almost exclusively in elevated locations - attics, rafters, wall voids, trees, and rooflines. Enter structures through gaps at roof intersections, AC penetrations, gable vents, and anywhere roofline material meets the wall. Most active after sunset and before dawn. Roof rats are the species most likely responsible for scratching sounds heard at night above the ceiling.

Most Common - Attic Pest

Norway Rat

Rattus norvegicus

Larger and stockier than roof rats, with coarse brown fur, small ears, and a blunt nose. Their tail is shorter than the body length - a key visual distinction from roof rats. Norway rats burrow rather than climb, nesting under buildings, beneath concrete slabs, along irrigation systems, and in ground-level debris. Common near water sources and in areas with agricultural activity. Enter structures through plumbing penetrations, damaged sewer pipes, and foundation gaps at ground level.

Ground Burrower - Slabs & Foundations

House Mouse

Mus musculus

Much smaller than either rat species - 3-4 inch body length with a thin, scaly tail of similar length. Gray to light brown with a white belly. House mice can squeeze through a gap as narrow as 6mm - roughly the diameter of a pencil - and nest inside walls, cabinets, appliance voids, and under insulation. Reproduce rapidly: females can produce 4-7 pups per litter and have up to 10 litters per year. A single mouse inside is almost never just one mouse.

Walls & Kitchen Cabinets

What to Look and Listen For

Signs of a Rodent Infestation

Rodents are nocturnal and largely hidden - but they leave clear evidence. The signs vary slightly by species, which is why identification matters.

👂

Scratching & Scurrying

Scratching, gnawing, or rapid scurrying sounds in the ceiling, walls, or attic - particularly after dark when rodents are most active. Roof rats in attics produce a characteristic quick scratching followed by movement. Norway rats in walls produce slower, heavier sounds.

🖤

Droppings

Rodent droppings are one of the most definitive signs of infestation. Roof rat droppings are spindle-shaped, about 12-13mm. Norway rat droppings are larger at roughly 20mm. House mouse droppings are tiny - about 3-6mm, similar to rice grains. Location of droppings helps identify species and travel routes.

🦷

Gnaw Marks

Fresh gnaw marks are light in color and become darker with age. Common locations include wooden structural members in the attic, electrical wiring (look for exposed copper), AC ductwork, food packaging in pantries, and PVC plumbing. Gnaw marks on wires are an immediate fire hazard.

🪹

Nesting Material

Roof rats shred attic insulation to build loose, roughly circular nests. House mice use finely shredded paper, fabric, and insulation. Norway rats build ground-level burrow systems lined with similar material. Nest sites are usually in dark, undisturbed areas.

🍊

Hollowed Citrus

A Florida-specific sign: roof rats are notorious for hollowing out citrus and other fruit on trees or on the ground, leaving just the peel shell behind. This is one of the most common early indicators of a roof rat presence around Southwest Florida properties.

🐾

Grease Rubs & Runways

Rodents travel the same routes repeatedly - leaving greasy dark smears along walls, pipes, and beams where their fur contacts surfaces. These runway marks are particularly visible in attics along rafters and at entry points. Norway rat burrow entrances are marked by bare, packed soil paths.

David's Approach

Two Services, Two Different Goals

Bait stations manage rodent pressure. Exclusion permanently ends it. Both have their place - David will tell you which one your situation requires.

01

Full Property Inspection

David inspects the attic, roofline, exterior perimeter, foundation, and interior for evidence of activity, entry points, nesting sites, and travel routes. Species identification from droppings and signs determines the treatment approach before anything else.

02

Population Reduction

Trapping and bait stations reduce the active population. For attic infestations, Blink cameras are placed on traps so David can monitor remotely and respond quickly. Bait stations around the exterior intercept rodents before they reach the structure.

03

Exclusion & Sanitation

Every confirmed entry point is sealed with materials rodents cannot chew through - galvanized mesh, metal flashing, and Critter Quitter vent covers. Contaminated attic insulation is treated with Bac-A-Zap odor eliminator and DSV disinfectant. A 1-year warranty is included.

🏠 Exclusion Available

Bait Stations Manage It. Exclusion Ends It.

Rodent bait box service keeps populations suppressed around the exterior - a good option for ongoing pressure management. Exclusion seals every entry point and backs the work with camera monitoring, attic sanitation, and a 1-year warranty. David will tell you honestly which service fits your situation.

Rodent Bait Box Service

Tamper-resistant exterior bait stations serviced regularly - inspected, refilled, and documented. Starting at $45/box + $65/service.

Rodent Exclusion

Full sealing, Blink camera monitoring, attic sanitation, quarterly bait stations, and a 1-year warranty. Starting at $1,000.

Why Ratical

Florida Construction Knowledge Changes Everything

Roof rats exploit specific vulnerabilities in Southwest Florida's building style. Knowing what to look for - and where - is half the job.

🏠

Barrel tile roofs, open weep holes, aging fascia, and AC penetrations are the specific vulnerabilities that allow roof rats into Southwest Florida homes. David knows exactly where to look because he seals these entry points every day.

📷

Camera-Monitored Trapping

Blink cameras on attic traps let David monitor activity remotely - he knows when a trap is triggered without having to make unnecessary visits, and can confirm when the attic is clear before declaring the job done.

🔒

Permanent Materials

Entry points are sealed with galvanized hardware mesh, metal flashing, and Critter Quitter vent covers - materials rodents cannot gnaw through. Not caulk or foam that deteriorates within a year.
