PANTRY PEST
CONTROL
SERVICES

Small moths near the cereal. Tiny holes in the rice. Pantry pests are usually already in your kitchen before you notice them - and Florida is one of the most common places in the country to find them.

The Problem

Pantry Pests Usually Don't Come From a Dirty Kitchen

Per UF/IFAS, pantry pest infestations are not a sign of poor housekeeping - the eggs or larvae are usually already inside the food package when it's purchased.

Pantry pests - sometimes called stored product pests - are moths and beetles that infest dry food: flour, cereal, rice, pasta, spices, dried fruit, nuts, pet food, and bird seed. They typically enter a home as microscopic eggs or larvae already present in a food product from the store or warehouse. Once inside, an infestation develops quietly in the back of a cabinet or pantry shelf, often in a product that isn't used often, until adults emerge and start flying or crawling around the kitchen.

Florida's warm, humid climate supports year-round breeding once a population establishes - there's no seasonal slowdown the way there is in colder states. The Indian meal moth, the single most common pantry moth nationally, is most heavily concentrated in Florida specifically, where the climate suits it especially well.

  • Usually Store-Bought - Most infestations begin with eggs or larvae already present in a purchased food package, not from anything inside your home.
  • Hidden Until Noticed - Populations often build for weeks in an infrequently used pantry item before adults are seen flying or crawling.
  • Spreads Between Containers - Once established, larvae move from the original infested package into nearby food items, especially if containers aren't sealed tightly.
  • Year-Round in Florida - Warm, humid conditions mean no natural die-off period the way colder climates experience.

Common Species

Pantry Pests David Treats in Sarasota & Manatee County

Per UF/IFAS Entomology, these are the species most commonly found infesting stored food in Florida homes.

Indian Meal Moth

The most common pantry moth in the country - and most heavily concentrated in Florida, where the climate suits it best. Adults are small, about 3/8 inch, with reddish-brown and grayish-white banded wings. Larvae are small, off-white caterpillars that produce silk webbing in infested food and can travel a surprising distance before pupating, including into nearby rooms.

Most Common - Florida Concentrated

Saw-Toothed Grain Beetle

Small, flattened, reddish-brown beetles with distinctive saw-like projections along the sides of the thorax. One of the most frequently encountered pantry beetles, infesting cereal, flour, pasta, dried fruit, and a wide range of other stored products.

Common - Broad Diet

Flour Beetles

Red and confused flour beetles are small, reddish-brown beetles commonly found in flour, cereal, and milled grain products. Heavy infestations impart a grayish tint and an unpleasant odor to infested food, and can encourage mold growth in stored products.

Common - Flour & Grain

Rice & Granary Weevils

Small, dark, snouted beetles that bore directly into whole grains and seeds, leaving small round exit holes. Rice weevils can fly; granary weevils cannot. Infest rice, corn, wheat, pasta, and other whole grain products, and reproduce rapidly once established.

Whole Grains - Rapid Breeders

Cigarette & Drugstore Beetles

Small, oval, reddish-brown beetles with an unusually broad diet - cigarette beetles and drugstore beetles will infest dried herbs, spices, pet food, dried flowers, and even some non-food items like books and dried plant material in addition to standard pantry goods.

Broadest Diet Range

Warehouse Beetle

A particularly destructive species with one of the widest food ranges among pantry pests - cereals, candy, cocoa, cornmeal, pet food, flour, nuts, dried beans, pasta, and spices are all potential hosts. The larvae's shed skins and hairs can also cause irritation if consumed or handled.

Wide Host Range

Inspection & Treatment

Finding the Source Is the Whole Job

Spraying the kitchen does nothing if the infested package is still sitting in the cabinet. The infestation source has to be found and removed first.

🔍

Source Inspection

David inspects pantry shelves, cabinets, and food storage areas methodically - checking opened and unopened packages, looking for webbing, larvae, exit holes, and live or dead adults. Infrequently used items in the back of cabinets are a priority, since these are the most common overlooked source.

  • Full pantry and cabinet inspection, shelf by shelf
  • Both opened and unopened packages checked
  • Cracks, corners, and shelf liner edges examined
  • Pet food and bird seed storage included
🗑️

Removal of Infested Product

Any infested food item is identified and removed - this step has to happen before any treatment is effective. David helps identify which items are affected versus which can be saved, since not every product in the pantry is necessarily infested.

  • Infested items identified and removed
  • Adjacent products checked for cross-contamination
  • Guidance on what to discard vs. what's still safe
🧴

Cabinet & Shelf Treatment

Once infested product is removed, shelves and cabinet interiors are cleaned and treated to eliminate any remaining eggs, larvae, or pupae hiding in cracks and corners - the residual population that survives even after the obvious source is gone.

  • Shelves vacuumed and wiped down
  • Cracks and corners treated where pests hide
  • Monitoring traps placed to confirm elimination

⚠ Larvae travel before they pupate. Indian meal moth larvae in particular can crawl a significant distance from the food source before finding a place to pupate - sometimes ending up on walls or ceilings in rooms adjacent to the kitchen. If you're only seeing moths in one area, the actual food source may be elsewhere. This is why a full inspection matters more than just checking the one cabinet where moths were spotted.

David's Approach

Find It. Remove It. Treat It. Confirm It.

A pantry pest problem is solved by finding the source - not by spraying the kitchen and hoping.

01

Full inspection of pantry, cabinets, and storage areas to identify the species and locate every infested item - not just the one that was first noticed.

02

Remove

Infested food items are identified and removed. Adjacent products are checked for spread before they're confirmed clean.

03

Treat

Cabinets and shelving are cleaned and treated to eliminate any remaining eggs, larvae, or pupae hiding in cracks and joints.

04

Confirm

Monitoring traps placed to confirm the infestation is fully resolved and catch any remaining activity before it restarts.
