The Threat
Scorpions in Sarasota & Manatee County - What You Need to Know
Florida has four documented scorpion species. Three are found in or around Sarasota and Manatee County homes - all capable of delivering a painful sting, particularly dangerous to individuals with venom allergies.
According to UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County, scorpions are an established local pest found under stones, logs, and debris outdoors, and commonly entering homes near plumbing fixtures, air conditioning condensers, and moisture sources indoors. They are nocturnal hunters active after dark - when they are most likely to be stepped on barefoot, encountered in shoes, or found in bedding. Florida scorpions can live 3–5 years and are capable of reproducing multiple times per year, meaning an untreated infestation can become severe and long-lasting.
⚠ UV Light Detection: Scorpions glow bright green under UV (black) light - a technique David uses during night inspections to locate scorpions that are completely invisible to the naked eye. If you suspect scorpions, check shoes, towels, and bedding before use. Shake out clothing left on the floor. Individuals with bee or wasp sting allergies should carry an epinephrine auto-injector.
- ✓Nocturnal Activity - Scorpions hunt at night. Most stings occur when people step on them barefoot or reach into areas without looking.
- ✓Moisture Attraction - Scorpions found indoors in Sarasota and Manatee County are almost always near a moisture source - plumbing, A/C units, or leaks.
- ✓Entry Points - They enter homes through gaps in exterior walls, under doors, and through weep holes in block construction - common in both counties.
- ✓Year-Round - Florida's climate keeps scorpions active in all seasons, unlike states where cold winters limit their activity.
Florida Species
Scorpion Species in Sarasota & Manatee County
Three species are documented in this region. None are fatal to healthy adults - but all deliver painful stings and pose serious risk to those with venom allergies.
Florida Bark Scorpion
Centruroides gracilis
The largest scorpion found in Sarasota and Manatee County - reaching up to 4 inches. Brown body with small yellow dashes on the back. Introduced to Florida (native to Central America) but now well established throughout both counties. Commonly found under boards, in newly constructed or abandoned homes, in wall voids, and under rubbish. Nocturnal. Sting is extremely painful with neurotoxic and cardiac effects.
Hentz Striped Scorpion
Centruroides hentzi
The most widespread scorpion in Florida and across the southeastern United States. 2–3 inches, dark brown to tan with distinctive greenish-yellow stripes on the midsection. Native Florida species found under logs, stones, bark, and pine tree bases. A common invader of households and constructed environments - hides under baseboards, in closets, and inside wall voids. Has sex-specific venom, an unusual trait among scorpions.
Guiana Striped Scorpion
Centruroides guanensis
1.5–3 inches, predominantly yellow body with brown back and two dark longitudinal stripes. Found primarily in southern Florida counties - present in and around Sarasota and Manatee County especially in coastal habitat near mangroves, tropical landscaping, and imported palms. Hides in decaying logs and dense vegetation. Less commonly found indoors than the bark and Hentz species but present in the area.
Construction & New Homes
Scorpion infestations are particularly common in newly constructed homes in Sarasota and Manatee County. Construction disturbs soil and ground cover, displacing scorpion populations and driving them into the new structure. New construction materials including lumber, block, and landscaping mulch frequently harbor scorpions. Homeowners in new subdivisions in Lakewood Ranch and eastern Manatee County report higher than average scorpion activity.
New Construction RiskUV Detection Method
All Florida scorpion species glow bright green under UV (ultraviolet) light due to fluorescent compounds in their exoskeleton - a phenomenon clearly visible in darkness. This makes UV blacklight inspection a highly effective tool for locating scorpions both indoors and outdoors at night. David uses UV inspection during night-time treatment visits to identify scorpions that are completely invisible under normal lighting conditions.
Professional DetectionSting Symptoms & Response
Florida scorpion stings cause immediate localized pain, redness, swelling, and numbness or tingling at the sting site. Symptoms typically resolve within a few hours in healthy adults. However, individuals with venom allergies, children, and elderly adults may experience more severe reactions. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms spread beyond the sting site, or if the person stung has known insect venom allergies. The Florida Bark Scorpion can cause cardiac effects in rare cases.
