TICK
CONTROL
SERVICES
Ticks are active year-round in Florida and carry diseases that can affect both people and pets. David treats the yard zones where they're actually waiting.
The Problem
Ticks Are Active Year-Round in Florida
Florida's mild, moist climate doesn't give ticks a winter shutdown. Different species peak at different times - which means something is usually active in your yard nearly every month.
Ticks don't jump or fly - they wait. A behavior called "questing" has a tick climbing to the tip of a blade of grass or a leaf, extending its front legs, and waiting for a person, pet, or animal to brush past so it can grab on. This means ticks concentrate in very specific, predictable zones: tall grass, leaf litter, dense shrub lines, and the edges where lawn meets wooded or overgrown areas.
According to UF's Emerging Pathogens Institute, the lone star tick is the most common tick to bite humans in Florida, and it's aggressive about it - actively pursuing hosts rather than waiting passively. Several tick species carry diseases that affect humans and pets, and at least one - the brown dog tick - is notorious for establishing indoor infestations that are extremely difficult to eliminate once they take hold inside a structure.
- ✓Active Year-Round - Florida's climate means no full seasonal shutdown. Some species peak in summer, others in cooler months.
- ✓Questing Behavior - Ticks wait on grass and leaf tips with legs extended, grabbing onto anything that brushes past.
- ✓Predictable Habitat - Tall grass, leaf litter, brush piles, and the wood line edge are where the vast majority of ticks are found.
- ✓Brown Dog Ticks Go Indoors - Unlike most species, the brown dog tick can complete its entire life cycle indoors and is genuinely difficult to eliminate once established in a home.
Florida Species
Ticks David Treats in Sarasota & Manatee County
Florida is home to at least five tick species that bite humans and pets. Here's what's locally relevant.
Lone Star Tick
The most common tick to bite humans in Florida per UF/IFAS. Aggressive and actively pursues hosts rather than waiting passively. Females have a single white dot on their back. Nymphs active February through October, adults peaking in July. Carries ehrlichiosis and STARI, and is linked to alpha-gal syndrome - a tick-bite-triggered allergy to red meat.
Most Common Human-BiterAmerican Dog Tick
Active March through September. A primary transmitter of Rocky Mountain spotted fever - the most severe tick-borne disease in the U.S., with rising case counts in Florida during summer. Can also cause tick paralysis in pets and children if attached near the skull or spine, though symptoms resolve once the tick is removed.
RMSF VectorBlack-Legged Tick (Deer Tick)
The species associated with Lyme disease, though Florida sees far fewer cases than the Northeast. Also carries babesiosis and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). Most active in Florida's cooler months, generally September through May - opposite the pattern of most other local species.
Cooler-Season ActivityGulf Coast Tick
Resembles the American dog tick but with larger mouthparts. Nymphs found January through March, adults March through September. Transmits Rickettsia parkeri, a milder relative of Rocky Mountain spotted fever that causes a distinctive sore-like bite site rather than the classic rash.
Spring-to-Fall ActivityBrown Dog Tick
Prefers dogs as a host but will readily bite humans, and can transmit Rickettsia species to people if carrying it. Unlike other Florida ticks, this species can complete its entire life cycle indoors - crawling into wall cracks, baseboards, and furniture. Once established inside a structure, infestations are notoriously difficult to eliminate.

Tick-Borne Diseases Confirmed in Florida
Per UF's Emerging Pathogens Institute, the most common tick-borne diseases in Florida are bacterial - and Lyme disease has the most reported cases statewide.
| Disease | Primary Vector | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lyme Disease | Black-legged tick | Most reported tick-borne disease cases in Florida, though far fewer than northeastern states |
| Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever | American dog tick | The most severe tick-borne disease in the U.S.; cases rise in Florida during summer months |
| Ehrlichiosis | Lone star tick | Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches - often hard to diagnose |
| STARI | Lone star tick | Lyme-like rash illness; produces a target-shaped lesion at the bite site |
| Alpha-Gal Syndrome | Lone star tick | Not an infection - an allergic reaction to red meat triggered by tick saliva |
| Anaplasmosis (HGA) | Black-legged tick | Most Florida cases are travel-associated rather than locally acquired |
| Rickettsia parkeri Rickettsiosis | Gulf Coast tick | A milder RMSF relative; can be misdiagnosed as RMSF |
⚠ If you've been bitten: Remove an attached tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, grasping close to the skin and pulling straight up. Monitor the bite site for several weeks and contact a healthcare provider if a rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms develop. Where Ticks Actually Wait
Targeted Yard Treatment - Not a Blanket Spray
Ticks don't spread evenly across a lawn. They concentrate in specific zones - and that's exactly where treatment needs to go.
Tall Grass & Lawn Edges
The classic questing zone - ticks climb grass blades and wait with front legs extended. Keeping grass mowed short reduces available perches, and treatment along these edges interrupts the questing cycle directly.
- Lawn perimeter and unmowed edges treated
- Areas bordering wooded or overgrown lots
- Walking paths and trail edges prioritized
Leaf Litter & Brush
Shaded, moist leaf litter and brush piles provide the humidity ticks need to survive between meals. These zones are where larvae and nymphs develop and where adult ticks shelter during the day.
- Leaf litter and mulch beds treated
- Brush piles and woodpiles addressed
- Shaded, humid landscaping zones prioritized
Pet Areas & Indoor Check
Pets are a primary route ticks use to reach your home and family. David assesses pet resting areas and, if brown dog tick activity is suspected indoors, inspects baseboards, cracks, and furniture where this species can establish.
- Pet resting and play areas treated
- Indoor inspection if brown dog ticks are suspected
- Veterinary flea and tick prevention still recommended
100% Satisfaction Guarantee
If ticks return between scheduled treatments, David comes back at no additional charge. Your protection is his promise.
Tick Treatment Is Built Into the Elite Program
The Elite Pest Program includes flea and tick prevention and treatment at every bi-monthly visit - lawn edges, leaf litter, and shaded harborage areas targeted specifically, with active infestations addressed on discovery. Six visits a year keeps the questing zones in your yard treated consistently, rather than reacting only after a tick has already been found on a person or pet.

Treatment Where Ticks Actually Are
A generic full-yard spray wastes product on areas ticks never use. Targeted treatment of questing zones is more effective and more efficient.
Zone-Specific Treatment
David targets the grass edges, leaf litter, and brush where ticks actually quest - not a blanket application across the entire lawn.
State-Licensed Professional
Florida Department of Agriculture pest control license. Products and methods selected for the species and season actually present.
Family & Pet Safe
EPA-registered products applied precisely - safe for children and pets once dry, with clear guidance on re-entry timing.
Local Knowledge
David knows which species are active in this region and when - and adjusts treatment for seasonal shifts in tick pressure throughout the year.

Elite Pest Program
Flea and tick treatment, mosquito reduction, and full-yard fire ant coverage - all in one bi-monthly plan.
Flea Control
Fleas and ticks are often introduced the same way - by pets and wildlife. Addressing both together is most effective.
Wildlife Trapping
Raccoons and other wildlife are common hosts for American dog ticks. Removing wildlife pressure helps reduce reintroduction.
